The 2017 season for the Chicago Cubs is a story about average. In order to contend for the crown, they need to add players. But from where?

The sky is not falling, at least not yet. The recent play of the Chicago Cubs is pushing them forward in the standings. Holding on to win against the Major’s top offensive team shows the promise of this team. Yet, there are holes to fill.

The question is how to fill the holes. So far, manager Joe Maddon is using all parts of the roster. Players like Ian Happ and Javier Baez prove to be versatile tools, while Mike Montgomery and Eddie Butler at least plug leaks. The good news is help is on the way.

The Cavalry

For help, we look to the hills. Well, really it is the disabled list. The Chicago Cubs are facing questions about trades and call-ups from the minors, while the help they need is resting on the disabled list. As of June 26, four players that played crucial roles in 2016 are listed on the injury report. It is where the best options for help lay.

Even though the season for Ben Zobrist has challenged him, when healthy he is a deadly weapon. His versatility at the plate and wisdom of the game are just want the Cubs need in their daily line-up. Add to that an improving Jason Heyward and clutch Addison Russell, and the team has three quality players that do not cost the team anything. Well, other than sending another player down to the minors.

While the above three players could return this week, it is the arm returning after the All-Star break that is the true need. On the disabled list due to finger inflammation, Kyle Hendrick is what the team really need to press forward and win the division. Not only does Hendricks bring stability, he brings calm.

The Moves

The tough part of players returning will be the corresponding moves to free up spots. Should Zobrist return this week, Jeimer Candelario will be sent to Iowa. Then Mark Zagunis will return to Triple-A  when Heyward is ready. And Russell is listed as day-to-day, meaning he is still on the active roster. No move needs to be made for him to return. That is good news.

Felix Pena will move to clear a spot for Hendricks, and Montgomery will go back to the bullpen. With all the players returning, the need to more moves is diminished. Sure, the team could add a player here or there, but at what cost.
