The Chicago Cubs–per usual–battled to the very end in the 5-4 loss in the opener at Boston. But it was a five-run first inning that did the Cubs in, continuing an alarming trend.
First inning woes. The Chicago Cubs starting pitching continues to struggle in the first inning. Jake Arrieta‘s problems were some of the worst as he allowed five runs to the Red Sox in the 5-4 loss. The Cubs battled back, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit in the opener at Fenway. The Cubs keep digging themselves a hole right out of the gate, and while they’ve battled, there’s been a few games recently they couldn’t fight back into contention.
The Cubs farm system still has plenty of life left in it, even after all the talent that has made it’s way to Chicago. Some look at it as trade chips. Others see them as the future of the Cubs. Either way, there are several young prospects off to hot starts in the 2017 season that could be intriguing call-ups later this year.
There are many reasons to love Chris Coghlan. He had some good years with the Cubs, helping them win the World Series last season. Every time he’s counted out, he finds a way to fight back. And then while pulling off one of the plays of the year, he embarrasses Yadier Molina? Perfect. My guess is Coghlan figured if he plowed Molina instead of leaping over him, he may have gotten stuck to him.
