After falling to the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Friday night, some were disappointed to see the
Chicago Cubssuffer their first loss. Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of things it wasn’t as the news of Kyle Schwarber’s ACL and LCL tear came out and that he would miss the entire 2016 season, playoffs included. After being relieved to hear it was only a sprained ankle and not a break, The bad news came with the results of the MRI. Even with the depth the team has, it’s still a tough loss.
The Cubs high-powered offense took the night off on Friday as they only pushed across two runs on the night. With D-backs starter Robby Ray struggling with his control there were plenty of opportunities to add more runs. But the offense sputtered while Paul Goldschmidt got a big game-tying hit in the eighth off of Pedro Strop. Joe Maddon chose to let Strop pitch to him, and Goldschmidt answered with a single to knot it up at two. Yasmany Tomas hit the game-winner in the ninth with a single to left to score Chris Owings.
Los Angeles Dodgers starter Ross Stripling had never pitched above Double-A, but he held the San Francisco Giants hitless through 7 1/3 innings before being lifted by manager Dave Roberts. In the end, all he would have to show for it was a no-decision as the Giants rallied to win on a Brandon Crawford home run in the 10th inning.
