After a long month of Cactus League play, the Chicago Cubs find themselves battling it out with the Colorado Rockies before leaving Sloan Park. Today has been full of spectacular performances both on the mound and in the batter’s box. Especially for veteran southpaw Jon Lester.

Don’t get used to seeing or hearing this, but Lester recorded his first ever home run today. Yes, you read that right. Shortly after it happened, social media lost its mind. This is the same man who struggled to pick up his first career hit until finally doing so in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Who was on the mound that day? His good friend John Lackey. Lackey signed a deal to come to the North Side this past offseason, reuniting with Lester and catcher David Ross. All three men were with the Boston Red Sox when they last won the World Series and are aiming to bring a championship to the North Side of Chicago.

Lester entered 2015 with the title of ace for the Chicago Cubs, picking up the Opening Day start on ESPN. After having a major weakness exposed by baserunners in his Cubs debut, the 32-year-old knew he would have to work on his pick-off moves. This is something that haunted him throughout the season but he did, however, manage to nab Starling Marte on the road in Pittsburgh.

It was his first pick-off in over four years and came against one of the fastest players in the game. One of his many highlights of the season but what happened today will surely live on for the rest of his life.

Despite it bring spring training, knowing that he took a pitcher deep should not be taken lightly. First off, nobody knew he would make that type of contact and second, the power behind the swing sent it out to opposite field. Seriously, who is this man?

Not to mention the fact that he had himself a wonderful day on the bump. So far in five innings of work (the game is still live at this point), he’s held the Rockies to just one hit while striking out 10 batter’s. His earned run average has dropped to 2.12 on the spring.

Alright, now back to his at-bat. Before he stepped into the box, Ross found himself standing on second after picking up his second double of the afternoon. His previous extra-base knock tallied the first two runs of the ballgame for the Chicago Cubs back in the second inning.

Fast forward five pitches later and he’s trotting around third and eventually waiting to greet his best friend. Once the two men made their way back to the dugout, outfielder Kyle Schwarber connected on another 3-1 pitch and sent it back out to left-center field. The same area in which Lester deposited his home run.

Next: The anatomy of a drought

It’s been a wild day for the Chicago Cubs, well, wild spring training. Just makes me even more excited for Opening Night. Lester will pick up the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels on Apr. 5 before the Cubs make their way back to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks.

Now here’s the rare footage of Lester taking Scott Oberg deep courtesy of Jon Ferlise (@CubsKingdom) on Twitter.
