Cubs collect MLB-leading 12th walk-off win on Bryant’s home run
It’s hard not to get just a little bit excited about the Chicago Cubs this year. And games like the one onMonday afternoon do nothing to dampen it. After Jon Lester and the Cleveland Indians’ Corey Kluber put on an impressive pitchers duel, the Cubs got a walk-off home run from Kris Bryant to notch their fifth straight victory. On a day that the wind was gusting out of Wrigley Field, it wasn’t until the final pitch from Zach McAllister that a ball left the yard. If you’re going to hit one, that’s the way to make it count.
The loss of Jorge Soler and Jason Motte were difficult blows this late in the season, but neither will doom the Cubs. In the case of Soler, it’s possible that he hasn’t been at a 100% in a while if you look at his numbers. Every team has to weather these sort of issues, and if the Cubs hope to keep winning that’s exactly what they’ll need to do.
As the Cubs keep racking up walk-off wins, it’s hard not to believe luck is on their side. But the truth is it isn’t luck but the confidence that Joe Maddon instilled in them from his first day. Maddon has always believed in the mental side of the game, and that may be one of this team’s biggest strengths. The Cubs don’t believe they’re going to lose.
