Weekend This ‘n That- Starting Rotation, Bullpen, Bench, Bonser

facebooktwitterreddit

Lou Piniella announced earlier this week that he will announce his starting rotation on Wednesday, and that announcement will likely clear up the bullpen picture as well.  Reports have it that Tom Gorzelanny, and Carlos Silva are the leading candidates for the two open spots in the rotation. And Sean Marshall, and Jeff Samardzija will be used out of the bullpen to start the year.

Speaking of the bullpen, Lou Piniella told reporters that right handed reliever Justin Berg will make the team out of spring training. Berg, who was acquired in the Mark Derosa trade a couple years back,  will likely serve as middle reliever for the Cubs bullpen. The addition of Berg, means that their is only one remaining spot open in the bullpen and the candidates for the spot are Rule V selection Mike Parisi, John Guab, James Russell, and Marcus Mateo.

While the rotation and bullpen appear to be figured out, the Cubs bench is still to be determined. Obviously it is going to include backup catcher Koyie Hill,  outfielder Xavier Nady, and infielder Jeff Baker. But, that leaves two open spots left on the bench. And the Cubs would have to choose from a list that includes spring standout Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld, Kevin Millar, and Chad Tracy. If Millar  shows that he can play the outfield this weekend, look for him to make the team. And that would mean that Chad Tracy would not be on the team. Between Colvin and Fuld, I would have to go with Colvin, as he has been more impressive this spring.

Cubs Interested in Boof Bonser?

  • Sources are telling CSN’s New England’s Sean McAdam that the Cubs, along with the Diamondbacks are interested in Boof Bonser. Bonser, who is currently on the Red Sox, figures to be waived or traded in the next two weeks as he is out of options and does not appear likely to make the Red Sox’s opening day roster. Bonser, could be used in the rotation or bullpen for the Cubs.
