Ian Happ turned heads earlier this week with a message that sounded like an early farewell to the Chicago Cubs. Happ is a free agent next offseason, and unlike Nico Hoerner, the Cubs may be willing to let him test the market before engaging in contract talks. Happ has been among the most consistent Cubs players over the last three years, but he's also in a position where he could be one of the biggest bats available next winter.

The development of Matt Shaw and Kevin Alcantara could also play a role in Happ's future with the Cubs. If Shaw is capable of handling his own in the outfield, and Hoerner is extended, the Cubs may be willing to hand over one of the corner outfield spots to their 2023 first-round pick. And, if Alcantara takes a step forward in his development this year, perhaps the Cubs are also willing to let Seiya Suzuki test the market next offseason.

Ian Happ will have no shortage of suitors if the Cubs let him hit free agency next offseason.

It's going to be a thin free-agent market for bats next offseason, and sure, the potential work stoppage will complicate matters, but if Happ posts another season where his wRC+ is around 120, he's going to be coveted.

New York Yankees

The Yankees have been a team that has lingered in the background every time there has been a thought that the Cubs could trade Happ. If Happ hits the free-agent market next winter, chances are the Yankees will be among the teams interested. Especially when you consider that 18 of Happ's 23 home runs last year were as a left-handed hitter.

Cincinnati Reds

Ian Happ has made a career for tormenting the Cincinnati Reds' pitching. Given his success in Cincinnati, it would be fair to suggest that he would have some interest in calling the city his next home.

It certainly would be an awkward sight for Cubs fans, but after an offseason where the Reds failed to sign the big fish, targeting Happ next winter might be one of the best moves they could make.

Houston Astros

A consistent need that the Houston Astros have had over the past year has been for a left-handed hitter. If they get their wish, they would like to check that box off before Opening Day, but odds are working against them. It may not be until next offseason that the Astros can address this need, and with uncertainty also surrounding their outfield picture, targeting Happ makes all the sense in the world.
