If the diagnosis of Eugenio Suarez's injury is half as bad as it looked after he took a 95.6 MPH fastball to the hand on Monday night, the Chicago Cubs had better hope rookie Matt Shaw's second-half surge is the real deal.

Any team interested in Suarez - a list that included both the Cubs and the NL Central rival Milwaukee Brewers - is waiting with bated breath to receive an update. It's likely we won't get any sort of official word from the team until at least Tuesday, when the swelling around the injury starts to go down.

Update - 8:34 PM CST - Given the ramifications of a potential injury to Suarez ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Arizona Diamondbacks immediately took X-rays after the game. The X-rays came back negative, and there is no fracture in the hand of the All-Star third baseman. Given the news, a trade for Suarez remains on the table for the Cubs....and the handful of other teams circling with interest.

Cubs, others, wait to get an update on Eugenio Suarez's hit by pitch

Ironically enough, the pitcher who hit him plays for another of the teams reportedly interested in Suarez, the Detroit Tigers. In a 5-1 game in the top of the ninth, reliever Will Vest lost the handle on a 2-1 fastball that ran up and in, catching Suarez's hand. The All-Star third baseman didn't even attempt to stay in the game (which, fair, given his team was down four in the ninth) - but that only ratcheted up tensions online even further.

On the night, Suarez finished 1-for-3 with a strikeout in the loss. A formidable power bat on the cusp of free agency at season's end, a wide range of teams could, in theory, put together a trade package for him given his relative affordability (any club that acquires him would be on the hook for just a prorated portion of his $15 million salary) - so this injury just threw the brakes on a lot of team's plans as we all await an update.

If you're a team like the Twins, Willi Castro's market may have just ticked up a notch - and if you're the New York Yankees, who balked at Arizona's reported asking price for Suarez and pivoted to Ryan McMahon instead, you're feeling a lot better about a decision that, even now, I don't love for Brian Cashman's club.

The Cubs need help on the bench - and a player like Castro makes sense with or without a pursuit of Suarez. The simple truth is the market is very light on impact infielders and if Suarez hits the IL because of this, it has the potential to turn things on their head with just days left until the July 31 trade deadline.
