Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg took to Instagram on Wednesday to share an update on where things stand with his fight against cancer. Sandberg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January of 2024, and revealed that he was cancer-free in August of that same year. However, in an update last December, Sandberg shared that the cancer had returned.
In his update on Wednesday, Sandberg admitted the last few months have been challenging, but he has remained tuned into the success that the Cubs are having this season.
To all my Fans and extended baseball Family –
I wanted to share an update regarding my health. It’s been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis. While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends. I haven’t been to Wrigley Field as much as I hoped in the first half but I’m watching every game and am excited for the second half and to see Wrigley rocking like 1984!
Thank you for all the messages of support. Go Cubs!

Ryne Sandberg posts heartfelt update while continuing cancer fight
Of course, it was in June of last season that Sanberg's statue in front of Wrigley Field was revealed. It was a memorable moment for Sandberg, the Cubs, and the Wrigley Field faithful. A cool moment during the reveal ceremony was that Craig Counsell made it a point for the entire Cubs' roster to watch the unveiling as the team was spotted along the walkway for Wrigley Field.
Sandberg always had a strong connection to the Cubs' organization that extended beyond his playing days. Between 2007-2010, Sandberg began his managerial career in the Cubs' organization with the hope that he would eventually land as the skipper of the Major League team. Instead, after being passed over by the Cubs, Sandberg's managerial run at the Major League level happened with the Philadelphia Phillies between 2013 and 2015. Despite not reaching the postseason with the Phillies, there was still hope from Cubs fans that Sandberg would join Joe Maddon's coaching staff in 2017.
Despite being looked over by the Cubs as a manager, Sandberg has always had strong ties to the organization in the years since. Today and all days moving forward, we are RynoStrong.
