The Chicago Cubs' new all-star shortstop Dansby Swanson finally flashed his power on Sunday when he sent a long home run to center field off Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough.
Swanson's 2-run-homer came in the bottom of the third inning and put the Cubs up 3-0. This was Swanson's first bomb of the year and hopefully the first of many in his Cubs career. It was a most welcome sight as the former Atlanta Brave has struggled at the plate this Spring with just 4 hits in 40 at bats. Hopefully he can ride the momentum of this big swing into the final two Spring Training games against the White Sox on Monday and Tuesday.
Although his bat has yet to fully heat up, thankfully Swanson's gold glove caliber defense has looked great this month and it was on full display Sunday when he made a stunning flip to Nico Hoerner in the seventh inning. Hoerner was covering second base when Swanson made a very quick exchange with his infield partner on a ball hit up the middle to nab Royal's baserunner, Javier Vaz.
Hoerner had a nice day himself with a single and a run scored when he was along for the ride on Swanson's dinger. The Cubs went on to win the game by a final score of 5-0, with the other runs coming from home runs by Patrick Wisdom and Cody Bellinger. Barring any freak injuries, the defensive duo of Swanson and Hoerner will undoubtedly be in the Cubs' starting lineup on Opening Day playing shortstop and second base respectively against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.
