One area of weakness for the Chicago Cubs as they head into the 2023 Major League Baseball regular season is the lack of power. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer spoke before the season about the team's inability to elevate the ball last season and that would be a focus for their offensive additions.

While the Cubs did not fully address their need for power in the offseason they added a pair of bats in designated hitter Trey Mancini and center fielder Cody Bellinger that could help with their goal of elevating the ball more.

Mancini showed that ability on Sunday during the Cubs' Spring Training game against the Colorado Rockies as he hit his first home run of Spring Training.

After failing to hit at least 20 home runs for the first time in his career where he has had a full season of play, Mancini is joining the Cubs with the goal of bouncing back from the second-half struggles he had with the Houston Astros in 2022.

Initially, the belief was that Mancini would serve primarily as the team's designated hitter this season. However, in light of the injury to starting right fielder Seiya Suzuki, the expectation is that Mancini will get a bulk of the starts in the outfield once the season starts and Suzuki is still recovering.
