This Chicago Cubs Trade Rumor does not make sense

Chicago Cubs trade rumors have surfaced over the past couple of days that would seem to suggest that the Cubs may be interested in trading for Bo Bichette.

It's understandable that Chicago Cubs fans may get desperate for the team to start making moves and that in times when the off-season is at a lull, they like to float ideas out there and treat it as rumor gospel.

That is what is going on this week as social media has been infatuated with the idea that the Cubs are in trade talks with Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.

To be fair, this is not the first time that the Cubs have been mentioned as potentially having interest in Bichette. MLB Network's Jon Morosi previously connected the Cubs to Bichette in past offseasons and he, too, picked up on the rumor on Wednesday morning.

So, at the very least, we have a national reporter not refuting the idea that the Cubs and Blue Jays may be in trade discussions.

Bichette is in the middle of a three-year contract extension that he signed with the Cubs before last season. In 601 plate appearances with the Blue Jays last season, Bichette slashed .306/.339/.475 with a wRC+ of 125.

There would be a steep price to pay for the Cubs if they were to land Bichette from the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays won 89 games last season and are still in the middle of their contention window. Short of the Blue Jays embarking on a reset of some kind, it seems unlikely that they would have much inclination to move Bichette at this point.

In terms of the Cubs making a potential offer to the Blue Jays that would warrant seriously considering trading Bichette, then, at that point, it may be more worthwhile for the team to pursue a Juan Soto trade with the San Diego Padres. However, an infield consisting of Bichette, Nico Hoerner, and Dansby Swanson would be a fun sight to see.
