Patrick Wisdom began a minor-league rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs this past week and that has ignited a discussion around what Wisdom's role, if any, would be on the Major League roster once healthy.
The question stems from the fact that Garrett Cooper made the Chicago Cubs' Opening Day roster out of Spring Training and would seem to be an easy candidate to be in the starting lineup regularly against left-handed starting pitchers.
Given that Cooper is a right-handed hitter with some pop while being able to play first base and the corner outfield spots, there has been speculation that Wisdom may not return to the Major Leagues once healthy.
That would seem unlikely.
Wisdom during his rehab assignment, to his credit, is providing the primary reason why he will be a part of the Major League roster once healthy.
It can not be stated enough how much Cubs fans will need to recalibrate how they view the team's roster now that Craig Counsell is the team's manager. The main issue that was discovered with Wisdom is one of the most prominent power hitters that the Cubs have on their roster, the swing-and-miss in his offensive profile prevents him from being an everyday player.
There is a spot on the Chicago Cubs roster for Patrick Wisdom.
It's likely that Counsell is aware of this fact and we have already seen with his lineup construction that he is going to be strategic with how he deploys players.
Wisdom is going to return to the Major League roster once healthy and it likely will come at the expense of Miles Mastrobuoni. There is no doubt that Mastrobuoni provides versatility at the end of the Cubs' roster but as long as Nick Madrigal is on the roster, Wisdom should have priority over Mastrobuoni.
