Do I really need to say it? The Cubs’ second baseman, Nico Hoerner, is very good at baseball. In fact, he has been one of the hottest players on the Northside.

The 25-year-old switched positions during the offseason when the Cubs signed top free-agent shortstop Dansby Swanson. The front office recognized they needed to have a strong up-the-middle presence and know they would like to create a foundation around both of these players. This is why you saw them extend the contract (three years $35 million) of Nico Hoerner recently.

You are already starting to see those dividends pay off.  To start the 2023 campaign, Hoerner has been flourishing at his new fielding position and with leading off the top of the batting order. In the first month, he finished tied for the most hits (39) in all of Major League Baseball. This is on top of the on-base streak of 26 games.

For his efforts, the organization has named him their Player of the Month for March/April. He compiled a .328 batting average, 21 runs, 10 stolen bases, and 17 runs batted in. He may not hit for power (2 home runs) but he does everything else right. He is doing exactly what David Ross needs him to do.

He sets the tone for the rest of the team. The way he carries himself and prepares is one of a seasoned veteran. It’s been noticed by fans, teammates, and the organization. We all look forward to what the rest of the season holds for this young man. Hoping he can continue this production so he can be honored with an All-Star appearance later this season. For now, enjoy the accomplishment of being named the organization’s player of the month.
