New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was identified as an early off-season target for the Chicago Cubs but trade rumors involving Alonso have been non-existent.
Alonso and the Mets have yet to discuss any potential contract extension this off-season. The lack of extension talks between Alonso and the Mets would seem to suggest that there remains a possibility the slugging first baseman will be traded this off-season.
That was the indication made by Sahadev Sharma in The Athletic (Subscription Required) when he took a look at where things stand for the Cubs after losing out on Shohei Ohtani. Sharman mentioned Alonso twice in his piece with the belief that trade talks could be re-ignited now that the market is starting to pick up pace.
Alonso would be the clear answer to the Cubs' need for an impact bat in the middle of their lineup. Alonso has hit over 35 home runs in each season of his 5-year career with the only exception being when he had 16 during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
The Mets are believed to be in search of cost-controlled pitching so there would be a fit for a Cubs' team that has a plethora of pitching prospects that are near the top of their organization. Given the pushback on the Cubs' including Christopher Morel in a trade for Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays, it's likely that the same would apply for a trade of Alonso being that both will be free agents after this season.
