Potential Chicago Cubs' offseason target, Pete Alonso, reminded everyone last Thursday why the ability to hit a home run is the almighty trump card during the Major League Baseball postseason.

Even on Sunday night, in Game 2 of the NLDS between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres belted six home runs en route to a 10-2 victory. The importance of the home run postseason play can not be overstated.

That brings us to the Cubs. There is a lot to like about how Jed Hoyer has positioned the organization to be healthy over the next decade. The issue is that their focus on having well-rounded players at the Major League level has made them blind to the fact that they lack consistent power.

That is why Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report has the perfect lesson learned from the Cubs' 2024 season.

On the whole, though, the Cubs lineup felt like a planet without a center of gravity. The matter of their best hitter was a debatable one, and not the fun kind a la Aaron Judge vs. Juan Soto.

The Cubs must rectify this situation during the winter. If not by signing Soto, then perhaps by going after Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman or Anthony Santander.

Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, and Anthony Santander are all names that any Cubs fan should have circled as a potential impact bat to add to the starting lineup.

The Cubs' biggest offseason need is clear

For all the talk there has been about the Cubs lacking an established closer, it seems that the team is going to continue with the same philosophy in terms of constructing the bullpen. Sure, the Cubs could stand to benefit from having an established closer but a team first needs to have a need in the 9th inning for there to be a save opportunity.

The offense that was the Cubs' starting lineup during the months of May and June was not one that could be counted to build a lead in a game prior to the ninth inning. What changes that fact is adding a hitter that is feared. The Cubs haven't had that since Javy Baez's MVP-worthy season in 2018.
