There has been increased focus on Jed Hoyer's job security after a month of May where the Chicago Cubs went 10-18, currently trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by 7.5 games for first place in the National League Central division.

The Cubs are entering a pivotal two-week stretch--series against the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, and St. Louis Cardinals--where the direction the team takes at the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline is determined.

If the Cubs' play dictates that they will be sellers at the July deadline, there is no question that Hoyer's seat will be hot. Hoyer wants to be given the benefit of the doubt for being part of the front office that won the World Series with the Cubs in 2016 but hasn't had any success when separated from Theo Epstein.

Hoyer is also entering a pivotal point in his contract with the Cubs.

Hoyer signed a five-year extension with the Cubs after he was promoted to president of baseball operations after the 2020 season, meaning, his contract expires after the 2025 season.

For the most part, the Cubs typically avoid a member of their baseball operations entering the final season of their deal. Epstein resigned from the Cubs a year before his contract expired, and the Cubs had no problem dismissing David Ross in favor of Craig Counsell, considering Ross only had one year remaining on his contract with the team.

All this to say that Hoyer's contract status will not prevent the Cubs from making a change at the top of their baseball operation at the end of the season if needed. Still, it remains unlikely that Hoyer is not with the Cubs' front office in 2025 but a disappointing finish to the 2024 season would put pressure on the executive like he has yet to experience on the North Side,
