The Chicago Cubs appeared to dodge a major bullet as imaging revealed that second baseman Nico Hoerner suffered a mild hamstring strain in the game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
Hoerner is listed as day-to-day and the belief is that he will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list, David Ross spoke with reporters prior to the Cubs' game against the Cardinals on Tuesday and shared more information regarding Hoerner's status.
"“I don’t think anybody had serious red flags yesterday and was excited about that,” manager David Ross said. “But yet confirming that this morning was nice; it’s just very mild [strain]. And that this is something that we feel like is not an IL something he can deal with and manage.”"David Ross via Marquee Sports Network
Hoerner was not in the lineup during the Cubs' 6-4 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday but Ross did share that if the circumstances were different, Hoerner would have been available. Considering the Cubs are only in the second month of the regular season schedule, there is no need for the team to try and force the issue with Hoerner at this point in time.
It's worth noting that Hoerner had started every Cubs game this season prior to the game on Tuesday, Regardless of the injury, there is no question that there may be a benefit to the Cubs giving their starting second baseman a day off.
On the season, Hoerner is slashing .303/.348/.395 through 164 plate appearances this season to go along with a .329 wOBA and 105 wRC+.
Is Nico Hoerner in the Chicago Cubs starting lineup tonight?
Hoerner may have a stronger chance of playing in Wednesday's game against the Cardinals than he had on Tuesday but it still would seem likely that Christopher Morel will get the start once more at second base.
