The Chicago Cubs' game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday was forgettable as the team lost 17-0 in a game that ended with Matt Mervis and Patrick Wisdom as the final two pitchers in the game for the North Siders.
More concerning for the Cubs, third baseman Christopher Morel left the game in the seventh inning after colliding with left fielder Alexander Canario while tracking a foul ball.
Considering the Cubs are already dealing with injuries to Cody Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki, the idea of Morel being sidelined for any amount of time would be concerning.
The latest Christopher Morel injury update.
It appeared that Morel was dealing with an elbow injury but there were encouraging signs in that he was able to walk off the field on his own. After the game, Craig Counsell seemed to indicate that the Cubs avoided another devastating injury.
The Cubs' game against the Boston Red Sox is ESPN's game of the week on Sunday Night Baseball. That should provide more time for Morel to confirm that he is indeed able to play. It may not be a surprise to see Morel serve as the team's designated hitter with Nick Madrigal getting the start at third base.
The Cubs were not so lucky with Sunday's scheduled starting pitcher Jordan Wicks. Counsell revealed after the game that Wicks is dealing with left forearm tightness and will not be making the start against the Red Sox on Sunday. Given the rash of season-ending arm injuries that pitchers have suffered this season, the idea of Wicks' dealing with forearm tightness is not great news considering that often can be a precursor for a much larger concern. Making the start in place for Wicks will be Hayden Wesneski. Sunday will be another opportunity for Wesneski to prove himself in the starting rotation after shining in two appearances out of the bullpen this season.
