There is now a clear idea of what may be next for former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross after he was fired by the team last week to clear the way for the Cubs to hire Craig Counsell as their manager.
The New York Yankees offered Ross a spot on manager Aaron Boone's coaching staff as the Yankees' bench coach according to a report from The Athletic (Subscription Required) but it was an opportunity that Ross declined.
The report went on to mention that Ross, at this time, is only seeking another managerial position. There currently are three vacancies across Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, and San Diego Padres looking for a new manager. While there have been separate reports that both the Brewers and Padres may add Ross to their candidate list, there has yet to be an official interview reported with either team.
What is important to remember about Ross is that he was not fired from his job based on his performance alone. For the first month of the off-season, the Cubs were moving forward with Ross as their manager and there was no real issue with that idea as there was an understanding that his seat would be a little hotter during the 2024 season. Ross does have his shortcomings as an in-game manager and that is a large part of the reason why the Cubs pounced when Counsell, considered one of the best in-game managers in all of Major League Baseball. made it clear that he wanted to come to the North Side.
The Padres may be the team to watch for Ross as with the Cubs paying their former manager until 2025, that may ease the financial burden for a San Diego team that has been strapped for cash.
