Cubs manager David Ross' job is safe, says Jed Hoyer

The Cubs skipper's job seems safe - at least for the time being.

At least for one day, David Ross endeared himself once again to Cubs fans, following up his ejection with a NSFW tirade about the umpiring work and sketchy roof manipulation by the Brewers in Tuesday's badly-needed win.

The fourth-year Chicago skipper really let it fly in his postgame comments - and you can't blame him. There were brutal calls all afternoon long. But, man, can you imagine what he might have had to say if the Cubs hadn't come away with that one? Woo, boy.

Cubs continue to stick by David Ross, despite team's showing in first half

Given the Cubs' performance to this point, with less than a week left until the All-Star Break, calls for Ross' job have grown louder over the last week - really, since the team returned from London. But according to The Athletic, at least for now, making a change in the dugout isn't what president of baseball ops Jed Hoyer is focusing on.

"That’s not where I spend my time looking at it. I spend my time looking at, ‘What’s not translating?’ The obvious thing, and it’s been the obvious thing, is our high-leverage performance."

Ross, who owns a 218-250 record halfway through his fourth year at the helm, can't be judged solely on that big picture record. After all, he was handed seriously diminished rosters in both 2021 and 2022 - and the 2020 season was anything but a typical environment. But this year, with a renewed sense of optimism on the North Side, came higher expectations for Ross.

The lineup construction and some of the in-game decisions have left us scratching our heads at times, but Hoyer and the organization keep pointing to the underlying metrics that tell us all the Cubs should be better than their 39-45 record shows. But at the end of the day, this is a results-oriented business and you have to wonder if the front office's tune will change if the team can't get it together.
