The Chicago Cubs have a new manager as the team made a shocking move on Monday and hired Craig Counsell away from the Milwaukee Brewers.
It was a move that was similar to the hire that the Cubs made after the 2014 Major League Baseball season when the team fired Rick Renteria in favor of hiring Joe Maddon when there was a loophole in his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cubs pounced on Maddon when he became available and that was exactly what they did this off-season with Counsell when his contract expired with the Brewers on November 1.
David Ross, the Cubs manager since 2020, was informed that he would not be returning to the team on Monday after having an in-face conversation with the Cubs' front office. The "Goodfellas" references were an easy connection for Cubs fans to make.

Counsell has been a thorn the Cubs' side while serving as the Brewers' manager and fans are making the joke that now he will be able to experience managing a home game in Milwaukee.
After nine seasons, Craig Counsell will finally see what it’s like to manage a home game in Milwaukee.

The news of the Cubs hiring Counsell was a shocking development for Major League Baseball and there likely was no one more surprised than Ross.

While Cubs fans are shocked over the news of the Cubs hiring Counsell away from the Brewers, so are current Brewers' players.
I think maybe Brandon Woodruff sums up all our reactions to this Craig Counsell-to-the-Cubs news quite well:

"Lord have mercy."
In terms of what is next for the Cubs, fans are already dreaming.
