The Major League Baseball Winter Meetings begin today which means rumors are going to be flying over the next week as more players meet with teams. For the Chicago Cubs this off-season, one of the markets they have been linked to the most has been the shortstop market. More reports are surfacing linking the Cubs to Dansby Swanson.

A new report from Jon Morosi suggests that the Cubs and Phillies are among the teams that are actively showing interest in Dansby Swanson. In recent days it really does seem the Cubs and Swanson seem to be a real strong possibility. Not only did Morosi link the two, but Jon Heyman reported recently that the Cubs are the favorite to sign Swanson.

I think while a lot of fans would love for the Cubs to go into their pockets and try and sign a player like Carlos Correa, you cannot deny the amount of value that Swanson can bring to this Cubs team.

Swanson is coming off the best offensive season of his career slashing .277/.329/.447 and making his first-ever all-star appearance. Plus the defense is just as good as ever with Swanson winning the first gold glove of his career in 2022.

Swanson would be the perfect fit defensively for the Cubs with him playing shortstop and Nico Hoerner moving over to second base. That would make for one of the best defensive middle infields in the sport, especially with the shift being banned next season.

Offensively, Swanson would have to take over a much larger role than he ever did with the Braves considering he had much more support around him in Atlanta. He would be a solid addition to the top of the Cubs lineup, but if they went in this direction they would have to add much more offense other than just Swanson.

You cannot forget about the connection Swanson already has with the city of Chicago. His fiancée currently plays for the Red Stars, the women's soccer club in Chicago. That could potentially hold some leverage in Swansons decision this off-season.

Next. Cubs need to act quickly on shortstop market. dark

What the Cubs' plans are for this off-season currently feels like a muddy picture, but we should get a better idea by the end of the Winter Meetings once rumors turn into signings. For now, it does feel like Swanson and the Cubs is a match that could potentially come to fruition.
