Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon will pitch on Tuesday as the Cubs look to extend their winning streak to three games.
As crazy as this would have sounded at the beginning of the season, Taillon's start tonight could prove to be his final outing in a Cubs' uniform. Short of the Cubs winning out ahead of the deadline next Tuesday, it would seem that the team will be sellers.
Given that Jed Hoyer is still expecting the Cubs to contend during the 2025 season, the moves that the Cubs make at the deadline this season will not be reminiscent of the 2021 teardown. No one from the Cubs' core is expected to be moved but Taillon could be the biggest piece dealt.
The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are already two teams known to have interest in Taillon. Adding a new layer to the interest that the Red Sox have in Taillon, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score offered a prospect name to keep an eye on.
A catching prospect to keep an eye on is 22-year-old Kyle Teel, who’s playing at Double-A Portland in the Red Sox organization. Teel is hitting .305 with nine homers, 51 RBIs and an .861 OPS in 68 games at Double-A this season, and he’s a good defensive player. The Red Sox selected him at No. 14 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft.
MLB Pipeline lists Teel as the third best prospect in the Red Sox farm system, and the 24th best prospect in all of baseball. As Levine mentions, it would need to be an expanded deal beyond Taillon for Teel to be a part of the package being sent to the Cubs.
Teel should be ready for the Major League level during the 2025 season and would be a potential answer to the team's need at catcher. For a Cubs team that is not inclined to sell, Teel would be a worthwhile target if the Red Sox have an interest in multiple players that the Cubs are interested in moving.
