Chicago Cubs Prospects: Moises Ballesteros named to MiLB Prospect of the Week Team

MLB Pipeline makes a list of their prospect all-star team every week. The team covers all teams at all levels of the minors which means they look at the performances of more than 150 minor league baseball teams to determine which players have earned this honor.

The catcher for the prospect all-star team for the week of July 15th-July 23rd is none other than Chicago Cubs' number eight prospect, Moises Ballesteros. He earned that distinction by batting .444/.485/.741 with seven extra-base hits over that time frame and 10 walks compared to just 11 strikeouts. Keep in mind, we’re talking about a 19-year-old catcher at High-A.

This isn’t the first time that Ballesteros had a stellar week. He was our choice for the best hitter of the first half at High-A South Bend and he earned that by hitting .274/394/.457 with ten more walks (40) than strikeouts (30) at Low-A Myrtle Beach. That being said, he’s somehow been even better since being promoted to South Bend across the board putting together a .306/409/.458 slash line. 

When we made our top prospect list last week we had some thoughts on Ballesteros: 

"The Cubs are in a great position with catchers in their system. Miguel Amaya is hitting his stride and learning from two of the best defensive catchers going right now with Yan Gomes and Tucker Barnhart at the major league level. Pablo Aliendo is seemingly closer to the Bigs than Ballesteros at Double-A and they just drafted a couple of guys that have intriguing tools at the plate if they can stick behind the dish. That being said, Ballesteros is the best out of all of them and it’s not close in my opinion. I can’t wait to see this kid over the next couple of years and eventually at Wrigley Field."
