Chicago Cubs probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. San Diego Padres, May 8
Cody Bellinger returned from the IL on Tuesday and provided an instant boost to a Cubs' offense that had grown stagnant during the absence of both Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki.
Suzuki, by the way, is starting a minor-league rehab assignment with the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday, and the current plan is for him to potentially return to the Cubs' starting lineup for their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bellinger went 3-for-4 in the Cubs' victory on Tuesday over the San Diego Padres while clubbing his sixth home run of the season.
Not only does Bellinger provide the power that the Cubs' offense had been missing in recent weeks but he also provides stability at the top of the lineup--which is especially important given the struggles of Ian Happ this season.
Of course, Bellinger's return was upstaged by the walk-off home run that Cubs' first baseman Michael Busch hit.
Probable starting pitchers
- Hayden Wesneski makes the start for the Cubs on Wednesday in what could be his final start before a shift to the bullpen. With Kyle Hendricks completing a second rehab start on Tuesday, it would seem that he is just about ready to return. Hendricks will likely be placed back into the rotation while Wesneski moves to the bullpen. That is no slight to Wesneski, who has been excellent this season with a 0.54 ERA.
- Dylan Cease will be on the bump for the Padres on Wednesday. Cease struck out 7 Cubs hitters in his start against the North Siders last month in San Diego while going 6 innings en route to earning his first win in a Padres uniform.
