The woes of the Chicago Cubs' bullpen popped up once again during the team's loss to the San Diego Padres on Monday night at Wrigley Field.

It was as good of a return start as one could hope for Cubs' Opening Day starting pitcher Justin Steele. Steele suffered a hamstring injury during his Opening Day start against the Texas Rangers and was sidelined for the entire month of April.

Steele tossed 4.2 shutout innings against the Padres on Monday but it was for naught as Richard Lovelady and Daniel Palencia proceeded to give up 6 runs over the next inning and a third.

For all the jokes that can be had at not only Lovelady's name but the fact that he is pitching meaningful innings at the Major League level for the Cubs, his usage has stemmed from the injury to Julian Merryweather. Lovelady likely won't be much of a factor in the remainder of the Cubs' season once the pitching staff gets healthy.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Shota Imanaga will be on the mound for the Cubs on Tuesday as he looks to continue his excellent rookie season. Tuesday's start will be one of the first glimpses at how Imanaga handles summer games at Wrigley Field. The current forecast calls for winds to be blowing out to center field with gusts up to 11 mph.
  • Randy Vasquez is making the spot start for the Padres this season. In 2 starts this season, Vasquez has allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits and 3 walks.
