The Chicago Cubs open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Monday night at Wrigley Field.

The series will feature the return of Justin Steele, who has been sidelined for the past month with a hamstring injury he suffered during his Opening Day start against the Texas Rangers.

Steele's return should be the first sign of the Cubs adding reinforcements to their bullpen. Sure, the Cubs still should pursue external options, but the return of Steele, Jordan Wicks, and Kyle Hendricks, not too far behind, should lead to some shuffling of the Cubs' pitching staff.

Mainly, as opposed to pitching out of the rotation, Ben Brown and Hayden Wesneski will be moved to the bullpen. Both Brown and Wesneski have thrived this season no matter the role they've been asked to fill but a move to the bullpen may be how each pitcher provides the most value to the Cubs in 2024.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The king has returned. Lion King analogies aside, Justin Steele returning to the Cubs' rotation is a big deal. Steele appeared to be in Cy Young form during his Opening Day start and his return at the top of the rotation will provide stability along with Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon.
  • Former Chicago Cubs' ace Yu Darvish will be on the mound for the Padres. In his start against the Cubs in San Diego last month, Darvish was run from the game after three innings when he allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.
