The pitching matchup for the Chicago Cubs game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday signals what once was and what currently is in terms of pitching at the Major League level.

While there is still a place in the Major Leagues for a pitcher like Kyle Hendricks, the fact of the matter is that Hendricks, given his lack of velocity, has to be perfect with his pitch movement and placement. When Hendricks misses his spot, that leads to the struggles that he has had this season.

Meanwhile, Pirates' phenom Paul Skenes appears to be the direction the league is heading in terms of a starting pitcher who can hit 100 mph with ease but may only be good for 5 or 6 innings before needing to turn things over to the bullpen.

The Cubs may have their version of Skenes arrive at the Major League level soon. Cade Horton is at Triple-A Iowa currently with the expectation that a promotion to the Major League level could occur this summer.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Kyle Hendricks made his return from IL last Sunday for the Cubs when he took on the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Hendricks showed flashes of his former self by tossing 5 innings while only allowing 1 run and striking out 5.
  • Paul Skenes made his Major League debut against the Cubs last Saturday. In his first start of his career, Skenes struck out 7 in 4 innings while allowing 3 runs.
