Injuries continue to be the story of the Chicago Cubs' 2024 season.

The latest injury for the Cubs was third baseman Christopher Morel, who was removed from Saturday's 10-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates with knee soreness. The Cubs will likely provide an update on Morel's status prior to their game on Sunday.

Jameson Taillon's back injury appears to be resurfacing as well. Taillon was scheduled to be among the Cubs' starting pitchers for this weekend's series against the Pirates but has been dealing with a back strain since last Tuesday. Craig Counsell seemed to indicate that Taillon will be among the Cubs' probables for their series against the Atlanta Braves this week but that can't be a guarantee at this point.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Kyle Hendricks will be making his return from injury on Sunday. Hendricks was struggling considerably before being placed on the IL as he has a 12.00 ERA through his first 5 starts this season. Hendricks was scheduled to make a rehab start with the Iowa Cubs on Sunday but Taillon's setback created the need at the Major League level. Injuries to Taillon and Wicks will likely keep Hendricks in the starting rotation for the time being but if his struggles continue, his time in the rotation may be coming to an end.
  • Bailey Falter will be making the start for the Pirates on Sunday. On the season, Falter has a 4.34 ERA through 7 starts.
