The Chicago Cubs appear to be regressing back to mean in terms of the 2024 season projections.

Prior to the start of the season, the Cubs were projected to be around the 85-win mark for the season with the expectation that they could win the National League Central. The Cubs were playing at nearly a 100-win pace for most of the month of April but those projections have come back down to reality over the course of the past week.

Sitting at 22-16 on the season ahead of the start of their weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cubs are not at an 86-win pace for the season, according to the latest FanGraphs projections. According to those same projections, the Cubs are expected to be at the top of the National League Central when the season concludes and have a probability of just over 68% for clinching a post-season spot.

All things considered, it's an ideal start for the Cubs in the first season of their latest contention window. But. it's a reminder, with the Brewers projected at 85 wins, that the slightest variance could be a determining factor for whether or not the Cubs make the postseason.

All this to say that while it may be early, now is absolutely the right time for the Cubs to look at potential sellers and identify fits to address their needs.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Javier Assad will be making the start for the Cubs on Friday night. With an ERA of 1.66 on the season, Assad has done more than enough to remain in the team's starting rotation regardless of the roster fallout once Kyle Hendricks and Jordan Wicks return.
  • Rookie starting pitcher Jared Jones is making the start for the Pirates. Jones is off to a solid start for his career as he has a 2.63 ERA through his first 7 starts.
