For as disappointing as the Chicago Cubs' play was on the field during their weekend series against the Boston Red Sox, the team did receive some encouraging news on the injury front.
With Jordan Wicks, it seems that the Cubs are being cautious with their rookie starting pitcher. While Wicks was placed on the IL with forearm tightness, there was no MRI needed and it would seem that his placement on the IL was more about adding a fresh arm to the bullpen.
Justin Steele is set to make a rehab start with the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday. The current plan is for Steele to only make one rehab start before returning to the Major League rotation. That timeline would have Steele returning next week.
Cody Bellinger took some light swings on Sunday at Fenway Park in addition to running and playing catch. While the Cubs did not provide a definitive timeline on Bellinger's return, the fact the 2023 National League Comeback Player of the Year is already participating in baseball activities is an encouraging sign.
The Cubs open a four-game set against the New York Mets on Monday at Citi Field.
Probable starting pitchers
- Jameson Taillon is set to make the start for the Cubs on Monday night. Taillon has been effective in his first 2 starts, only allowing 2 earned runs, and the Cubs will need him to eat some innings after a shortened start by Hayden Wesneski on Sunday.
- Taillon's former teammate with the New York Yankees, Luis Severino, will be on the mound for the Mets. Severino has been effective to open the season as he has posted a 2.67 ERA throuhg his first five starts.
