The offense hit multiple home runs in a game for the first time in what felt like weeks, Jameson Taillon continued to be a dominant force on the mound and the Chicago Cubs evened up this weekend's series against the first-place Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

Christopher Morel homered for the fourth time in seven games, Nico Hoerner hit his first long ball of the season and Hector Neris survived a sixth save opportunity to nail down the victory, helping wash out the bad taste left in our mouths following Friday's late-inning unraveling.

Manager Craig Counsell hinted we could see both Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger back in the Cubs starting lineup as soon as this week and Justin Steele will make his first start since Opening Day on Monday against the San Diego Padres. At long last, it seems like the Cubs are turning the corner on this rash of early-season injuries.

That all bodes well for an offense that has been hit-or-miss and a pitching staff that badly needs some reinforcements in the bullpen. But, until then, this is the group that will go for a series win on Sunday.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Right-hander Javier Assad (2-0, 1.97) gets the ball for Chicago in the finale, looking to build on an incredibly impressive start to the season. He has been a key cog in this pieced-together starting rotation, helping keep the ship afloat as the Cubs navigate a sea of injuries. This season at Wrigley, Assad carries a 1.10 ERA in three starts, spanning 16.1 IP.
  • Opposite Assad is Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (3-0, 3.21). Milwaukee has not lost a Peralta start this season, a streak the Cubs will look to snap. The 2021 All-Star is playing a larger role than ever for his club this year after the departure of Corbin Burnes and the injury to Brandon Woodruff that could cost him the entire 2024 campaign.
