In a rare occurrence, the Chicago Cubs did not play a single game against a National League Central rival during the first month of the 2024 season.

That does add a level of intrigue to their weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. Not to mention, this will be Craig Counsell's first game managing against his former team.

The Brewers, through the way of their offense, have been one of the early surprises of the season across Major League Baseball. After Counsell's departure and the trading of Corbin Burnes, the expectation was that the Brewers were going to take a step back this season.

Instead, the Brewers sit at the top of the division with the Cubs trailing by one game.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Hayden Wesneski gets the start for the Cubs on Friday in what may be his final start as a member of the starting rotation. For Wesneski, it will be his second start of the season and he appears to be pitching with more confidence this season than he had last season. It would seem, under Counsell, Wesneski has benefited from having a clear understanding of what his role is on the Cubs' pitching staff. That messaging was often lost last season under former manager David Ross.
  • Joe Ross will be on the bump for the Brewers and the Cubs should have plenty of scoring opportunities on Friday afternoon. Ross boasts a 5.40 ERA on the season and got touched up for 7 runs (6 earned) in 5 innings of work against the New York Yankees last week in his most recent start.
