Chicago Cubs' president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer spoke with reporters prior to the team's 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and the biggest takeaway is that Hoyer is leaning on the track record of the offensive players that the Cubs have on their roster.

The issue with Hoyer's statement is that if you look at the "back of the baseball card" for many of the Cubs' position players, it confirms the fear about the starting lineup.

Across the Cubs' starting lineup, they have players who, in theory, could be good offensive but have failed to have consistency in their approach.

The only player that can be applied to is Cody Bellinger, who needs to prove that the 2023 anomaly that was his offensive success can be repeated this season.

Other than Bellinger, the Cubs are depending on players consistently outplaying their projections. No matter if it's Christopher Morel, Ian Happ, Dansby Swanson, Michael Busch, or Seiya Suzuki, the Cubs' roster is filled with players who have good stretches of offense but struggle to bring consistency over the course of a 162-game season.

That has been the consistent problem with every Cubs' offense since 2021 and the only fix will be for the team to open their wallet in free agency.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Shota Imanaga will be back on the mound for the Cubs after his scheduled start against the St. Louis Cardinals last Friday was rained out. Imanaga has emerged as the Cubs' ace in his first season in Major League Baseball, posting a 0.84 ERA through his first 9 starts.
  • Bryse Wilson will make the start for the Brewers on Wednesday. In 13 appearances this season, Wilson has an ERA of 2.86 with 38 strikeouts.
