Probable Starting Pitchers
With the news of Jameson Taillon heading to the 15-day IL with a left groin strain, Javier Assad gets the call-up to be Thursday night's starter for the Chicago Cubs.
After a strong showing with Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, Assad had previously made two appearances in relief this season with the Cubs before being sent to Iowa, allowing six earned runs across four innings in his time in the Majors. In his lone start in Iowa this year, Assad lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and notching two strikeouts.
For the Dodgers, Michael Grove takes the mound for his third start of the season – and just the ninth of his young MLB career. In the nine starts of his career, he’s put up a 6.52 ERA across 38 2/3 innings, including a 9.00 ERA across 13 innings in the 2023 season.
Before the news of Taillon's injury, Thursday was expected to be a rematch of Saturday's contest that resulted in a 2-1 Dodgers win, as both Taillon and Grove limited two top-five offenses to just one run combined in the game. Grove finished his day going 5 2/3 innings allowing just one run on two hits and striking out six, allowing the lone run to none other than yet another home run from Patrick Wisdom.
