The Chicago Cubs lost in excruciating fashion on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field where the decisive play was infielder Nick Madrigal being thrown out at home on a play that featured the worst send by a third-base coach in recent memory.

Seiya Suzuki lined a double down the left-field line and rather than make its way all the way to the corner of the left field, the ball was losing momentum, allowing Cincinnati Reds' left fielder Jacob Hurtubise to get it quicker than a standard double down the line and the rest can be chalked up to Reds' shortstop Elly De La Cruz proving why he has among best traits in all of baseball. De La Cruz has an excellent arm and his throw to home registered at over 90 mph.

On that surface alone, it was a terrible send by Cubs' third-base coach Willie Harris. What makes it even more egregious is the fact that there was only one out at the time and Cody Bellinger was the next batter up. Meaning, the long fly ball that Bellinger hit to right field would have tied the game on a sacrifice fly instead of ending the game.

Friday's ending was yet another example of flat the Cubs have been playing and exposing more reasons why Madrigal has no business on this team.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Justin Steele will take the ball for the Cubs on Saturday, once again being asked to be the stopper for the team. Steele seemed to have turned the corner from his early-season struggles during his last start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Memorial Day. Steele tossed 7-shutout innings while striking out 8.
  • Hunter Greene will be making the start for the Cincinnati Reds. Greene is not an ideal matchup for a Cubs' lineup that has proven to struggle with velocity. On the season, Greene has a 3.06 ERA through 11 starts.
