The Chicago Cubs have yet to score a run in their series against the Atlanta Braves this week and the team will be hoping to avoid a sweep on Wednesday night.
It would seem that the other shoe is in the middle of dropping for the Cubs.
Between the injuries, the ineffectiveness of the bullpen, and the offensive struggles of cornerstone players such as Ian Happ, it would seem that the Cubs are regressing back to the mean after playing most of April at a 100-win pace.
The Cubs' good news is that they play in a division that should not get away from them. Even with their recent struggles, the Cubs are within two games of first place in the National League Central. Beyond that, outside of the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies, parity has been the theme of play across the entire National League.
That is likely why the Cubs are not jumping out ahead of the trade market. The Cubs remain in a position where they can wait to get healthy before determining what their needs will be at the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline in July.
Probable starting pitchers
- Javier Assad continues to be an anchor while being a part of the Cubs' starting rotation. Assad's ERA on the season sits at 1.70 through his first 8 starts and as long as this success continues, there is no need to remove him from the rotation.
- Charlie Morton will be making the start for the Braves. Through 7 starts this season, Morton has an ERA of 3.14
