The MLB Winter Meetings have begun and the offseason is in full force. Owners are meeting in sunny San Diego for the annual gathering of baseball's brass. We have already seen a couple of big moves made, shaping this week up to be one wild ride when it comes to free agency.

The Chicago Cubs have been rumored to be finalists for a couple of big name stars. Most notably, it is being reported that the Cubs are pushing hard for shortstop (possibly third baseman) Xander Bogaerts. While that would be a huge signing for the franchise, work still needs to be done around the diamond to build a team that can contend for a championship consistently for the foreseeable future. One position of need still to be filled is behind the dish and All-Star catcher Willson Contreras is still on the market.

Willson Contreras coming back to the Cubs is still not so far fetched.

These past couple of years, all we have heard from Contreras and his camp is how much he loved being a Cub and wanted to remain a Cub for his entire career. We did go through a couple of social media scares - deleted pictures and changed bios - but when speaking, his tune never changed. The Cubs said they wanted him to stay, but the only action we've seen from them that shows that is not trading him at the deadline this past season. Offers were reportedly there, but none matched what value they felt was worth it in return. The Cubs offered him a qualifying offer to re-sign him, but to no one's surprise, it was immediately declined.

Contreras is looking for a raise and the Cubs have a hole to fill with money to spend. Who's to say the Cubs didn't tell Contreras to go find the best contract out there and bring it back to them to see how willing they are to match or exceed? Based on what has happened so far, Contreras and the Cubs reuniting may feel as far from reality as anything, but it is not completely out of the realm of possibility.
