The Chicago Cubs are promoting top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong to Triple-A Iowa.
Sahadev Sharma reported that Crow-Armstrong is on his way to the Iowa Cubs and is expected to be in the lineup for their Tuesday game.
While there other implications in regard to this promotion, let's talk about Crow-Armstrong.
For the crowd that complained at the start of the season that the Cubs do not have a blue chip prospect as they had during their last rebuild, Crow-Armstrong has proved them wrong.
Crow-Armstrong has put up video game numbers with Double-A Tennessee this season. In 342 plate appearances with the Tennessee Smokies this season, Crow-Armstrong is slashing .289/.371/.527 with a 134 wRC+ and 14 home runs.
The defense and speed were always going to project well for Crow-Armstrong at the Major League level but it is his hitting development that has transformed into being a Top-10 prospect in all of Major League Baseball.
If Crow-Armstrong gets off to a hot start with the Iowa Cubs over the course of the next month, the idea of the Cubs promoting their top prospect to the Major League level during the final month of the season may not be that farfetched.
Now for the other implications outside of one of baseball's top prospects now being on the doorsteps of the Major League level.
The Iowa Cubs have a crowded outfield picture at the moment. Alexander Canario recently returned to Iowa after his minor-league rehab assignment and joined an outfield mix that includes Yonathan Perlaza, Darius Hill, and Nelson Velazquez.
With the Cubs having shifted their deadline approach to being buyers, the idea of the front office including one of the aforementioned four outfielders that are currently at Iowa as part of a trade to address a need at the Major League level seems likely. Perlaza or Velazquez may be of interest to a team such as Seattle Mariners which are seeking young outfielders in exchange for Teoscar Hernandez or Ty France.
