After a blistering start to the season for Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom, he has since come back down to earth over the course of his last 57 plate appearances.

Since April 20th, Wisdom has a slash line of .167/.286/.375 with a .295 wOBA and 83 wRC+. The power numbers are still there for Wisdom as he has 3 home runs with a .208 ISO. Wisdom's strikeout rate has also spiked over the same stretch of games as he is striking out at a 42.1% clip.

The struggles of Wisdom have led to him falling in the batting order as he has routinely hit toward the bottom of the lineup over this recent stretch of games. The struggles of Wisdom could also lead to the return of Christopher Morel sooner rather than later.

The Cubs have been adamant that Morel will remain with Triple-A Iowa until there is a path to consistent playing time at the Major League level. One could argue that regardless of how Wisdom is performing, the path may already be present with Morel. Morel has the ability to play every position on the field with the exception of first base and catcher. Between days off and matchups, there is no question that Morel would be able to start, at least, 3-5 times a week.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom has returned to earth after his hot start to the season.

The struggles of Wisdom have only further exposed the shortcomings that the Cubs have at the bottom of their 26-man roster. Nick Madrigal is the next man up for the Cubs at third base and he has been just as bad as Wisdom since April 20. In 32 plate appearances since April 20, Madrigal is slashing .194/.219/.258 with a .212 wOBA and 28 wRC+. Unlike Wisdom, Madrigal does not have the power to inflate his offensive metrics.

With Wisdom now slumping and Madrigal struggling as well, the Cubs have a need for Morel and should not wait any longer.
