Iowa Cubs (AAA) (56-38)

The Iowa Cubs beat the Indianapolis Indians 9-4

Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and then poured it on in the third to make it 5-0. Even when Indianapolis drew it within one in the top of the eighth the Cubs came out strong in the bottom of the eighth with four more runs of their own to come away with another victory.

Nelson Velazquez (OF) went 1-for-5 with his 16th home run of the season but he also struck out three times.

Yonathan Perlaza (OF) went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored to raise his batting average to .287.

David Bote (3B) went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored.

Matt Mervis (1B) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. It was nice to see the power peak out again even if it also came with two strikeouts.

Alexander Canario (OF) went 2-for-5 with his first double of the season, a single, and two RBI.

Jordan Wicks (LHP) went five innings and only allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (51-38)

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Mississippi Braves 3-1

There wasn’t much to talk about in this one. The Smokies were held scoreless until they tied it up in the bottom of the eighth inning and then they gave up two more runs to put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth inning. The most notable thing was probably Pete Crow-Armstrong being held off base for the entire game, taking an 0-for-4.

Haydn McGeary (1B) went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Jordan Nwogu (OF) went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored but he also struck out twice.

DJ Herz (LHP) was very strong. He went five innings and only allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out eight.

Brailyn Marquez (LHP) wasn’t as dominant as his previous appearances but he kept the ERA at 0.00 by allowing no runs in an inning of work giving up two walks and a hit.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (39-50)

The South Bend Cubs lost to the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-4

The Cubs fell again dropping to 11 games under .500. They went down 1-0 in the top of the first but quickly snagged that run back in the bottom half. They gave up another run in the third, then three in the seventh, and even with adding another three of their own over the seventh and eighth they couldn’t quite push it over the top to tie it back up or take the lead and they fell 5-4.

Christian Franklin (OF) went 1-for-3 with his third homer of the year and a walk. He’s still only batting .204.

Kevin Made (SS) went 2-for-4 with his third homer of the year as well and he also added a single and a walk to bring his average to .229.

Connor Noland (RHP) went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out four.

Max Bain (RHP) went one scoreless inning and allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one and lowering his ERA to 2.16.

Eduarniel Nunez (RHP) went one scoreless inning and allowed two hits while striking out the other three batters he faced.

Sheldon Reed (RHP) threw the final 1.2 scoreless innings of the game and didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out one.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (51-38)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Columbia Fireflies 5-0

The Pelicans came away with the W in this one through just five innings. We still had some solid offensive performances despite significantly less opportunity and the Pelicans are in great shape as the season continues at 13 games over .500.

Reivaj García (1B) went 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored to bring his batting average on the season up to .295.

Parker Chavers (OF) went 1-for-2 with a single, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Jefferson Rojas (SS) continued to outperform the more highly-touted Cristian Hernandez by going 2-for-3 with two singles, an RBI and a run scored.

Marino Santy (LHP) had the five-inning shutout in this one. He didn’t allow a hit and issued three walks while striking out eight.
