Chicago Cubs Minor League Recap: Kevin Alcantara is a single shy of the cycle

The Chicago Cubs hitting prospects were spectacular yesterday with Kevin Alcantara and Alexander Canario leading the way, but the pitching left much to be desired.

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (69-51)

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Indianapolis Indians 10-9

This game had all the makings of a fantastic win. The Cubs scored in seven different innings and slowly clawed their way back to making it a game after giving up seven runs in the third inning. They tied the game 9-9 in the top of the ninth inning only to then give up the walk-off in the bottom of the ninth and they fell 10-9.

Darius Hill (OF) went 3-for-5 and ended up just a home run shy of the cycle while adding three runs scored.

Matt Mervis (1B) continued his power surge by hitting his 17th home run in the top of the 9th to tie the game.

Alexander Canario (OF) is on another planet right now. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two home runs, and two runs scored. He’s now batting .296 at AAA and may have passed Pete Crow-Armstrong in terms of the next outfielder up considering his current spot on the 40-man roster. If you want some more information about Canario you can check out the piece we posted this morning.

Luke Little (LHP) pitched two scoreless innings and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out four. With the Cubs badly needing relief pitching (especially left-handed relief pitching) he could find himself at Wrigley Field by the end of next week.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (66-50)

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Chattanooga Lookouts 18-0

Welp. There’s really not much to say about this one. The Smokies were down 4-0 by the end of the second inning and then the Lookouts decided to pile on seven runs in the sixth, four more in the seventh, and then another three in the eighth. The good thing with baseball is if the Smokies win by one run today both of those games are worth the same amount in the standings so let’s go get 'em.

Haydn McGeary (DH) went 0-for-1 but he added three walks.

Nelson Maldonado (DH) went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Brandon Birdsell (RHP) lasted 3.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five.

Joe Nahas (RHP) came in for the next 1.2 innings and the wheels completely fell off as he gave up seven runs on six hits and two walks while only striking out one.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (50-65)

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 14-8

This team has a chance to turn things around when some of the 2023 draftees from Myrtle Beach get the call-up, but until then things continue to be rough. A 2-0 lead wouldn’t last as the Cubs found themselves down 9-3 by the end of the fourth inning and were never able to dig themselves out of that hole.

Kevin Alcantara (OF) went 3-for-5 and ended just a single shy of the cycle while adding five RBI and two runs scored.

Matt Shaw (SS) went 2-for-4 with two singles, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

Parker Chavers (OF) went 3-for-4 with three singles. He doesn’t do much in terms of power but he is hitting .300 at South Bend this year.

Grant Kipp (RHP) gave up seven earned runs over three innings on five hits and three walks while striking out four.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (68-48)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 6-5

The Pelicans had yet another walk-off win yesterday and it was possibly even more exciting than the win on Wednesday. Myrtle Beach entered the bottom of the ninth down by a run but they scored and forced extra innings. They gave up two runs in the top of the 10th but came around in the bottom of the 10th to score three of their own and came away victorious.

Cristian Hernández (SS) went 1-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored.

Pedro Ramirez (2B) went 1-for-1 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Brian Kalmer (DH) went 1-for-3 with his sixth homer since being drafted and added two RBI and a run scored.

Luis Rujano (RHP) threw four innings and allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three.
