Chicago Cubs Minor League Recap: Cade Horton continues to dominate

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (71-54)

The Iowa Cubs beat the Toledo Mud Hens 7-1

Iowa was the only minor league affiliate of the Cubs that came away victorious yesterday and they did so in pretty impressive fashion. Jared Young basically carried the offense on his shoulders with his massive day and it was a bullpen day for the staff as six different Cubs helped hold the Mud Hens to just one run. 

Jared Young (1B) went 2-for-4 with two homers, a walk, six RBI and two runs scored. 

Alexander Canario (OF) went 1-for-5 with a double. 

Luke Little (LHP) looks to be a day away from Wrigley Field as he threw 1.1 innings and didn’t give up a run or a hit while walking two and striking out two as well. 

Michael Rucker (RHP) may be ready for a return to the big league bullpen as well as he threw a perfect ninth inning while striking out the side and lowering his ERA at Iowa to 0.87 for the year. 

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (68-53)

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Biloxi Shuckers 7-4

The Smokies went down 2-0 in the top of the second but it looked like a class comeback as they came up with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Unfortunately, the time of the game that is most important is the end and Tennessee gave up two runs in the top of the eighth and another two in the top of the ninth as they fell 7-4.

Pablo Aliendo (C) went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. 

Haydn McGeary (1B) went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.

Cole Roederer (OF) hit his 13th homer in this one as he went 2-for-3 with a single as his other hit, a total of four RBI and a run scored. 

Cade Horton (RHP) had a less impressive start than he’s used to but was still impressive by everyone else’s standards. He went five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. 

South Bend Cubs (A+) (52-68)

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Fort Wayne TinCaps 3-2

South Bend did just about everything you could hope for in a loss. They put up eleven hits but only three of them went for extra bases. The biggest indicator that a loss was coming their way could be found in the walk column where the Cubs were unable to draw a single walk, although that may be a sign of a generous home plate umpire as the TinCaps only drew one. 

Christian Franklin (OF) went 1-for-4 with a solo homer. 

Kevin Alcantara (OF) went 2-for-4 with two singles. 

Brennen Davis (OF) went 2-for-5 with a double, a single, an RBI, and perhaps most importantly, only one strikeout. 

Connor Noland (RHP) took the loss again and fell to 1-8, although he played fine in this one. He went five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six. 

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (70-50)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans had their game against the Charleston RiverDogs rained out
