Chicago Cubs Minor League Recap: Brennen Davis is Back

The Chicago Cubs minor league teams played pretty well yesterday, but by far the biggest contribution came from former top prospect Brennen Davis in High-A.

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (70-54)

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Toledo Mud Hens 11-6

The Cubs went down 3-0 early in this one and even when they tried to claw back by making it 3-2 in the top of the fifth they turned around and gave up five more runs in the bottom of the fifth. They tried to make it a game again in the top of the sixth by adding three more but they couldn’t keep the Mud Hens off of the board the rest of the way and fell 11-6.

Jake Slaughter (3B) went 1-for-3 with his 22nd homer on the season and three RBI.

Luis Vazquez (SS) went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.

Riley Thompson (RHP) was the starter yesterday and fell to 2-7 on the year by pitching 2.2 innings and giving up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (68-52)

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Biloxi Shuckers 9-0

Oof. This one was never close. The Smokies gave up six runs in the first inning and only managed to put together four total hits, of which only one went for extra bases. Like I said last week though, each game counts the same so if the Smokies come out and win 2-1 today they’ll still be 1-1 in the series.

Andy Weber (2B) went 1-for-3 with a double.

Joe Nahas (RHP) only got one out in this one. He gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits and a walk.

Riley Martin (LHP) closed the game out with two innings of scoreless baseball. He gave up one hit and one walk while striking out three.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (52-67)

The South Bend Cubs beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-3

The Cubs came away victorious by putting up two runs in each of the first two innings, but the most important thing that came from this game was that Brennen Davis, a former top prospect in all of baseball Brennen Davis, hit a home run. If the Cubs, who already have a top-five system in baseball can get him back on track it would be absolutely massive.

Moises Ballesteros (C) went 2-for-5 with two singles and a run scored.

Brennen Davis (OF) went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.

Josh Rivera (SS) went 2-for-4 with a homer, a single, a stolen base, three RBI and a run scored.

Tyler Santana (RHP) was great yesterday. He went six innings and gave up two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out six.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (70-50)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Charleston RiverDogs 3-2

The Pelicans had a great team win in this one and Brett Bateman got on base multiple times. I feel like that’s been true of every game that’s been played for the last week and a half and the Pelicans are now easily in the lead of all of the Cubs’ farm teams at 20 games above .500.

Pedro Ramirez (2B) went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, and a walk.

Brett Bateman (OF) went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI.

Keon Moreno (RHP) went five innings and only gave up one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six.
