The Chicago Cubs minor league affiliates were in action again on Sunday and the big names played well including Cristian Hernandez, Matt Mervis, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kevin Alcantara.

Iowa Cubs (AAA) (52-36)

The Iowa Cubs beat the Columbus Clippers 4-3

The Cubs were down for much of the game in this one but the bats came alive late and the bullpen shut down the opposition. Tell me that wouldn’t be a fun sentence to read about the major league squad.

Yonathan Perlaza (OF) went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in the 8th inning to bring the Cubs within one and a walk.

Jake Slaughter (DH) put the game away with a two-run shot later in the eighth inning that gave the Cubs the lead in a 1-for-4 performance.

David Bote (3B) went 1-for-3 with his 9th homer of the season and added a walk.

Matt Mervis (1B) had maybe his best game since returning to AAA as he went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored. It’s still disheartening to see Mervis’s power has almost completely vanished but maybe this is the start of a turnaround.

Hayden Wesneski (RHP) only lasted three innings in this one as he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Bullpen threw six innings of scoreless baseball. Each of Ryan Jensen, Chris Clarke, Jeremiah Estrada, Cam Sanders, Bailey Horn, and Manuel Rodriguez threw an inning and they combined to allow one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts to come away victorious.

Tennessee Smokies (AA) (46-37)

The Tennessee Smokies beat the Montgomery Biscuits 11-1

As good as good team wins feel, good team blowouts feel even better. The Cubs had ten hits, five for extra bases, they took five walks and their starting pitcher absolutely dominated for five innings to end the game before it really even started as the Cubs were up 11-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Pete Crow-Armstrong (OF) only disappointed by doing this in Tennessee rather than Iowa. The promotion should come very soon after he went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Owen Caissie (OF) shouldn’t be too far behind Crow-Armstrong. He went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk, two RBI, and a run scored.

Haydn McGeary (1B) went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

BJ Murray (3B) went 1-for-3 with a single, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Cole Roederer (OF) went 1-for-1 with his eighth homer of the season, a walk, and two runs scored. He was one of the prep outfielders the Cubs took with Brennen Davis and it looks (at least for now) like he may be the more likely of the two to make a big league difference.

Bradlee Beesley (DH) went 2-for-4 with his sixth homer of the season, a single, four RBI and a run scored.

Levi Jordan (SS) continued to hit as he went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Kohl Franklin (RHP) was dominant. He threw five scoreless frames and only allowed two hits and no walks while striking out nine.

Blake Whitney (RHP) relieved Franklin and threw another two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and no walks while punching out three.

Luke Little (LHP) only threw one inning but also didn’t allow a run and only allowed one hit with a strikeout.

South Bend Cubs (A+) (36-47)

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-4

This was a tough loss to take. You had some great outings from your hitters (especially at the top of the order) and you had some great middle relief. Unfortunately, the closer couldn’t finish it up and the Cubs went down 5-4. This is the sentence we’re more used to seeing in reference to the major league squad.

James Triantos (2B) went 2-for-5 with a triple, a single and an RBI.

Ezequiel Pagan (OF) went 2-for-5 with two singles to raise his batting average on the year to .322.

Kevin Made (SS) went 2-for-4 with his 15th double of the season, a single and two RBI.

Kevin Alcantara (OF) went 2-for-5 with his 18th double of the season, a single and a run scored.

Yohendrick Pinango (OF) went 3-for-5 with a double, two singles and a run scored.

Connor Noland (RHP) started the game and went 4.1 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits with only one strikeout.

Brailyn Marquez (LHP) was the player that brought me the most joy in the system yesterday. He threw a perfect inning with one strikeout to keep his ERA at 0.00 across four appearances at South Bend in July.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (A) (49-34)

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Carolina Mudcats 8-0

How about another absolute beatdown? The Pelicans came to play yesterday and again it was the names you wanted to see putting up the production. Myrtle Beach is now 15 games over .500 and they’re only going to be getting stronger as guys from the complex leagues start to get the call.

Andy Garriola (OF) went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in the 4th inning.

Cristian Hernández (SS) went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, and a stolen base. It’s been a rough season as he’s carrying just a .577 OPS but maybe this will help turn it around for the second half.

Rafael Morel (OF) went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

Pedro Ramirez (2B) went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Marino Santy (LHP) was the starter and went four scoreless, hitless frames. He did walk four but he also struck out six.

Scarlyn Lebron (RHP) went three perfect innings with two strikeouts.

Starlyn Pichardo (RHP) would have had a great stat line as he went two scoreless innings with a strikeout, but he gave up the only hit of the game.
