Iowa Cubs (AAA) (52-36)
The Iowa Cubs beat the Columbus Clippers 4-3
The Cubs were down for much of the game in this one but the bats came alive late and the bullpen shut down the opposition. Tell me that wouldn’t be a fun sentence to read about the major league squad.
Yonathan Perlaza (OF) went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in the 8th inning to bring the Cubs within one and a walk.
Jake Slaughter (DH) put the game away with a two-run shot later in the eighth inning that gave the Cubs the lead in a 1-for-4 performance.
David Bote (3B) went 1-for-3 with his 9th homer of the season and added a walk.
Matt Mervis (1B) had maybe his best game since returning to AAA as he went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored. It’s still disheartening to see Mervis’s power has almost completely vanished but maybe this is the start of a turnaround.
Hayden Wesneski (RHP) only lasted three innings in this one as he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out five.
The Bullpen threw six innings of scoreless baseball. Each of Ryan Jensen, Chris Clarke, Jeremiah Estrada, Cam Sanders, Bailey Horn, and Manuel Rodriguez threw an inning and they combined to allow one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts to come away victorious.
