The Chicago Cubs home opener at Wrigley Field on Monday was electric.
The game served as the Major League debut for starting pitcher Shota Imanaga. Imanaga was brilliant in his first start for the Cubs as he struck out nine Colorado Rockies hitters in six innings of work.
The only fear that Cubs fans had after Imanaga's start was that he would not factor into the decision as the game was tied at 0 after Imanaga's final frame of work.
Fortunately for Imanaga and the Cubs, Christopher Morel had the back of his starting pitcher.
Christopher Morel's little league home run will have Chicago Cubs fans talking for days.
For all the talk that has surrounded Christopher Morel's defensive play at third base, the fact remains that Morel is one of the most electric hitters in the starting lineup. The hope Craig Counsell has is that Morel's offensive performance will outweigh any defensive miscues that he may have.
That was the case on Monday as Morel had an error earlier in the game when he was unable to secure a line drive hit by former Cubs' third baseman Kris Bryant.
There is no question that April games at Wrigley Field take on a life of it's own.
The field conditions of Wrigley Field on Monday against the Rockies were very similar to a memorable game that the Cubs had against the Atlanta Braves in April of 2018 season. Despite facing a five-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Braves, the Cubs used the elements and defensive miscues of the Braves to their advantage.
For all the criticism thrown toward the direction of the MLB schedule makers, their preference for early-season games at Wrigley Fields has created endless memories for Chicago Cubs fans.
