The Chicago Cubs released their 2024 regular season schedule on Thursday and the team is set to open the season on March on March 28 against the Texas Rangers.
For the Cubs, this is the second time since 2019 that the team will open the season against the Rangers in Texas. The Rangers took two of three games from the Cubs at the start of the 2019 season.
For the Cubs, there are two series in particular during the second half of the 2024 season that will have fans buzzing.
In August of 2024, the Cubs will host the Detroit Tigers for a 3-game series. Barring a trade or injury, the series is shaping up to be the Wrigley Field homecoming for shortstop Javier Baez.
Baez is in the second season of a six-year deal that he signed with the Tigers prior to the 2022 Major League Baseball season. Baez's tenure with the Tigers has been off to a disappointing start and those struggles have continued this season. In 355 plate appearances with the Tigers this season, Baez is slashing .225/.260/.329 with 6 home runs and a 62 wRC+.
Baez's homecoming in August next season won't be the only Wrigley Field return for a legend from the 2016 World Series-winning team.
In September of next season, the Cubs will host the New York Yankees for a three-game set during the first weekend of the month. That means that for the first time since being traded by the Cubs to the Yankees in 2021, first baseman Anthony Rizzo will return to Wrigley Field.
While the Cubs played the Yankees last season and this season, each series was in New York. There is no doubt that the scene will be surreal next season when Rizzo returns to Wrigley Field and plays first base for the opposing team.
