Cardinals vs. Cubs prediction and odds for Wednesday, May 10 (Pitcher's duel on tap at Wrigley Field)
By Reed Wallach

The Chicago Cubs have been knocked around by the St. Louis Cardinals at home so far this series, dropping the first two games of its series, can they get back on track with its best pitcher this season on the mound?
Justin Steele has been a monster in 2023. The left hander has an ERA well below 2.00 and will look to shut down the Cardinals, who are last in the NL Central after winning it last season.
The Red Birds will counter with fellow southpaw Jordan Montgomery in hopes of this series being the catalyst for turning around its season.
Here are the odds and our betting breakdown for Wednesday matchup:
Cardinals vs. Cubs odds, run line and total
Cardinals vs. Cubs prediction and pick
Both pitchers are well above average, and Steele may be shaping up to be a Cy Young contender if this keeps up. The Cubs pitcher has an MLB best 1.45 ERA while allowing only seven earned runs in over 43 innings. He has been absolutely nails all season and will be on the mound with winds blowing in at Wrigely Field at over 10 miles per hour.
While the Cardinals have pop in the lineup, top 10 in batting average against lefty pitching, I still give the edge to the Cubs pitcher, who has been elite at generating soft contact all season long.
Meanwhile, Montgomery has been closer to elite this season than his numbers indicate. The left hander has a 3.29 ERA with a Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) mark at 2.83, showing that his numbers are a bit skewed with some poor defense when the ball is in play.
Montgomery does a great job of limiting barrels, which means less home runs and with the wind blowing in that's only going to help him.
This is a tight matchup, but I'm going with the under in what could be an epic pitching duel.
